Somehow, I managed all day to avoid the new of Gabby Douglass’ remarkable All Around Women’s Gymnastics triumph, becoming the first US woman to win gold in both team and all around Olympic gymnastics competition. Here in the US we do not get to see marquee Olympic events in real time on the network with Olympic broadcasting rights–NBC–due to the realities of privately-owned broadcast television, which is supported by advertising revenue.
In any case, when I watched her victory late night Thursday, the excitement was the same as it was live. She excelled at all four events — vault, balance beam, uneven bars and floor exercise, performing superbly and solidly, or “normal” as her teammates urged on the day of the team all-around competition. Watching Gabby Douglass soar in her leaps and twists and flips and soar her way into Olympic glory and hearts and minds everywhere, it occurred to me. Here is a prime example of a Power Achiever, someone with focus and drive, who accomplishes what they set out to do and by doing so achieves so much more, for themselves and others.

Some note that perhaps Douglass was never really an underdog, given that she won the Olympic trials, contributed a third of Team USA women’s gymnastics team score, and won the all around, after all. Certainly she was an underdog in terms of others’ expectations of her within the gymnastics community, making her win all the more sweet!
Others have written about how Gabby’s attitude, demeanor and performance has restored the true meaning behind Olympic competition.
The beauty of her win is also in the ancillary and deserved and likely life-changing rewards that will come her way.
Of course, Gabby is a power achiever on multiple levels, not least of which is being the first Black woman to win all around gymnastics gold in this modern era of the Olympics.
So if you are seeking some inspiration today to keep at it, look no further than Olympic champion Gabby Douglass.
To your success!
